Who it serves

Cheaper watts is the whole ballgame for a family on a fixed income. Every point of efficiency is a lower bill in a house that is already choosing between heat and groceries.

Talking points

  • Efficiency gains only matter to me when they show up on somebody's utility bill.
  • We want to license and deploy, not admire from a distance.
  • Our first installs go to households with the least margin, not the best credit.

Sodium-ion cells for stationary and cold-weather storage

Storage chemistry built from abundant sodium instead of scarce lithium and cobalt, with strong cold-weather behavior and a much safer thermal profile.

Who it serves

Buffalo and Niagara winters break the assumptions lithium was designed around. Sodium-ion keeps a shelter, a recovery house, or a family basement running in February.

Talking points

  • Cold-weather performance is not a spec sheet item here, it is whether the heat stays on.
  • Abundant materials mean the supply chain is not one geopolitical event from failing.
  • We would host a real-world winter pilot and publish the numbers, good or bad.

Bidirectional power flow from vehicles and appliances

Hardware and software that let a parked vehicle or a large appliance push power back into a home or the grid during peak demand or an outage.

Who it serves

A driveway becomes a backup generator. For a household with a medical device or a newborn, that is the difference between staying home and going to an emergency room.

Talking points

  • Most families already own the battery. They just are not allowed to use it yet.
  • Outage resilience is a health outcome, not a convenience feature.
  • We can bring the households, the data, and the community trust to a pilot.

The orbital edge-AI teams

On-satellite inference and meaning-first compression

Running models in orbit so a satellite sends the conclusion instead of the raw image, cutting downlink cost by an order of magnitude.

Who it serves

Flood and storm warnings arrive in minutes instead of hours, including for places that never get their own ground station.

Talking points

  • Send the meaning, not the pixels. That is the whole idea and it changes who gets warned.
  • Minutes of warning is the entire difference for a family with one vehicle.
  • We want the humanitarian channel treated as a first-class customer, not a leftover.

The microwave-domain computing group

Frequency-domain processing under 200 milliwatts

A processor that computes on microwave signals directly, reconstructing storm imagery from a fraction of the original data at a tiny power budget.

Who it serves

Under 200 milliwatts means sensors can live where there is no grid — rural roads, riverbanks, and neighborhoods nobody funds.

Talking points

  • Low power is a moral argument: it works where the grid does not.
  • The encoding is physical, so privacy is a property of the hardware rather than a policy promise.
  • We would fund sensor placement in the neighborhoods that get skipped.

Robots that design, run, and learn from their own experiments continuously, compressing discovery cycles from months to days.

Who it serves

Talking points

  • Speed of discovery is a public health metric, not an academic one.
  • We want addiction and trauma indications in the queue, not last in line.

  • The unmet need in our community is craving and sleep, not another blockbuster.
  • We will help recruit and support participants with real follow-through.

Systems that specify a desired property and return both a candidate material and a plausible way to actually make it.

Who it serves

Better insulation, cheaper filtration, and durable low-cost building materials rebuild a block instead of a showroom.

  • We are interested in materials for vacant-building rehab, not luxury finishes.
  • Insulation is health care in a Northeast winter.
  • Give us one target: cheapest durable retrofit for a 1920s Buffalo double.

Models that keep physical constraints while using learned components to run fast enough for street-level forecasting.

Who it serves

Block-level heat and flood risk lets us tell a specific family on a specific street what to do tonight.

Talking points

  • City-level forecasts are useless to somebody deciding about their own basement.
  • We can distribute guidance in plain language and five languages.
  • Warning without a ride and a place to go is not a warning. We provide both.

Error correction that produces logical qubits reliable enough to run useful chemistry and optimization workloads.

Who it serves

Route optimization and molecular simulation are the two things standing between our shuttle network and our medicine work getting cheaper.

  • Our first quantum question is boring on purpose: optimize rides for people without cars.
  • We would rather be a proving ground than a press release.
  • Access for nonprofits should be part of the roadmap, not an afterthought.
